From Middle High German turteltūbe, türteltūbe, from Old High German turtulatūba, turtultūba, turtiltūba, from Medieval Latin tortella, turtella (two Middle Latin diminutive forms), from Latin turtur (an onomatopoeic word imitative of the dove’s call, i.e., its coo or cooing).
