From Middle Low German swāne, variant of swan, from Old Saxon swan, from Proto-Germanic *swanaz (“swan”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *swen- (“to sound, resound”). Compare Dutch Low Saxon zwaon, Dutch zwaan, English swan, West Frisian swan, German Schwan, Swedish svan.
