From Proto-Norse *stainawarijaʀ (*stainawarijaʀ), which consists of *staina- (*staina-, stone) and *warijaʀ (*warijaʀ, defender), from Proto-Germanic *stainaz (stone) and *-war-. In some cases, the second part of Steinarr might stem from another root, and would be cognate to Old High German Steinheri.
