From Ancient Greek Σᾰμᾰΐᾱς (Samaḯās), from Biblical Hebrew שְׁמַעְיָה‎ (shema'yá, Šəmaʿyā́, “Shemaiah”), from שָׁמַע‎ (shamá', šāma, “to hear”) +‎ יָהּ‎ (yáh, Yāh, “two letters of the Tetragrammaton”), literally "God heard".
