Scheune

German

Etymology

From Middle High German schiune, from Old High German scugin(n)a, probably eventually from the root Proto-Indo-European *(s)kew- (to cover, hide, cloud). The word was originally chiefly East Central German versus otherwise predominant Scheuer (Austro-Bavarian also Stadel). Scheune was reinforced by cognate Middle Low German schǖne.
