Etymology
From Middle High German schelme (“pest, plague; those who have fallen in battle”), Old High German scalmo (“plague”). Cognate with Middle Low German schelm (“carrion, cadaver”), Dutch schelm, Icelandic skelmir (“rogue”).[1]
