Etymology
A misspelling of New Latin rhynchops, from Ancient Greek ῥύγχος (rhúnkhos, “beak”) and ὤψ (ṓps, “face”), coined by Linnaeus and maintained because the misspelled form was the first to appear in print.
Usage notes
Originally and properly feminine gendered (R. nigra) but now treated as masculine (R. niger).
