From the root *kor- (cut) + *-yto (see *kopyto), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kor-, from *(s)ker-. For similar formations, compare Lithuanian prãkartas (manger, trough), Old Prussian pracartis (trough), from the root *(s)kort- an extension of *(s)kor-.
