From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱmoros, a derivation from *h₂éḱmō (stone) (compare Sanskrit अश्मन् (aśman) 'stone'), from *h₂eḱ- (sharp). Reflex of -r variant of PIE heterolytic -r/-n stem.
