Formed as *dati (to give) + *-nь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *dōˀnis, itself from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-ni-s, the action noun of *deh₃- (to give). Cognate with Lithuanian duõnis (gift), Latin donum, Sanskrit दान (dā́na).
