Origin obscure. Possibly a conflated word, partly from *þeudō (people), from Proto-Indo-European *tewtéh₂ (people); and partly from *þeudjaz, *þiudiz (good, friendly), from Proto-Indo-European *tew- (to hearken, take notice, regard in a friendly manner).
