Etymology

A derivative *soo- + *-ra from an otherwise unattested root, possibly loaned from Proto-Germanic *stā-, *stō- (to stand). In this case the earliest meaning would have been "free-standing, erect", as is suggested by the further derivative *sooro (penis of domesticated animal).
