Perhaps from *esus (good) + *genos (born; family) (compare Ancient Greek Εὐγένιος (Eugénios), Sanskrit सुजन (sujana)).[1][2] First element alternatively from *Aysus, *Esus of uncertain theonym meaning.[3][4][2]
