Muttern
German
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈmʊtɐn/, [ˈmʊtɐn]
Usage notes
The dialectal inflected form Muttern is (or was) applied in the dative and accusative cases when used without an article, i.e. in the sense of “mum”: Du sollst Muttern helfen. — “You're supposed to help Mum.” This was typical of eastern German dialects, including that of Berlin, but is now widely obsolete. A remnant of this usage is the phrase wie bei Muttern, which has spread far beyond its original dialectal territory.
