Etymology

Schröer suggests a combination of Hebrew מֵפִיץ mêp̄îṣ ("destroyer") and ט֫פֶל tōp̄el ("liar") from ט֫פֶל שֶׁ֫קֶר tōp̄el šeqer ("falsehood plasterer"), see שֶׁקֶר; compare Job xiii:4).[1]
