From Italian Marsala, from an Arabic name, probably مَرْسَى عَلِيّ (marsā ʿaliyy, “Ali's harbor”), or possibly مَرْسَى اللّٰه (marsā llāh, “God's harbor”). In any case, the first element is مَرْسَى (marsā, “harbor”).
