From Old English medestan, meddestane from earlier mægdan stane (“the maidens' stone, the people's stone”). Ultimately from Old English mægden +‎ stan or mægð +‎ stan which are equivalent to maid(en) + stone. Compare Folkestone and Chiddingstone.
