From Middle High German mar, mare, from Old High German mara, from Proto-Germanic *marǭ (“nightmare, incubus”) (compare English (night)mare), from Proto-Indo-European *mor- (“feminine evil spirit”). Akin to Old Irish Morrígan (“elf queen”), Albanian tmerr (“horror”), Polish zmora (“nightmare”).
