Contraction of Liên bang Xô viết (“Soviet Union”), which is a contraction of Liên bang Cộng hòa Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Xô viết (“Union of Soviet Socialist Republics”). Compare Mandarin 蘇聯 (Sūlián, Tô Liên), Japanese ソ連 (Soren), Korean 소련 (Soryeon).
