From Brazilian Portuguese *suçuarana, *çuçuarana (via French couguar or English couguar), either from Tupian/Old Tupi suasuarana (“deerlike animal”) (from suasú (“deer”); compare sɨwasuarána (“cervine”)) or from Guaraní guaçuara.
Usage notes
Rarely pluralized to Kuguars.
