Via German Low German from Middle Low German krūke, from Old Saxon krūka. Cognate with Dutch kruik, English crock, Danish krukke (“jar”), Icelandic krukka (“pot”), French cruche (“jug”) (from Frankish). Further origin unsettled. A relation with Krug (“jug”) is considered likely.
