Etymology

From Middle High German küssen, from Old High German kussīn (ca. 900), from Old French cussin, variant of coussin, coissin, from Vulgar Latin *coxīnus, derived from Latin coxa. The form Kissen with dialectal unrounding was standardised to avoid homophony with küssen (“to kiss”). Cognate with Dutch kussen, English cushion, French coussin.
