German

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈkastn̩/

Etymology 1

From Middle High German kaste, from Old High German kasto.

Noun

Kasten m (genitive Kastens, plural Kästen or Kasten, diminutive Kästchen n or Kästlein n)

  1. crate (e.g. for bottles)
  2. (regional, Germany) box, case
  3. (regional, Austria and parts of southern Germany) cupboard

  • The normal plural is Kästen; the unchanged plural Kasten is now widely obsolete. (In the 19th century, however, the umlaut form was still deprecated as “wrong”, for example in Grimm's Deutsches Wörterbuch.)
