From an earlier Jóan (which is still in use), from Latin Iōhannēs (variant of Iōannēs), from Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָן‎ (Yōḥānān), perhaps contracted from a former יְהוֹחָנָן‎ (Yəhōḥānān, “God is gracious”).
