Etymology

Originally called Hōrologium Oscillitorium (Latin for "pendulum clock"). Named by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1763 to honor the Dutch astronomer and mathematician Christian Huygens, inventor of the pendulum clock.
