From Middle High German hiute, from Old High German hiutu, hiuto (today), a contraction of hiu tagu (literally (on) this day), from Proto-Germanic *hiu dagu (on this day); similar to other constructions in Old High German (e.g. hiuro < *hiu jāru ((in) this year), see Heuer); and cognate with Old Dutch hiudo (> Dutch heden (today)), Old Saxon hiudu, hūdigu, hōdigo (> Middle Low German hüde, hüdene (today)), Old Frisian hiōda, Old Frisian hiūdega (> West Frisian hjoed (today)), Old English hēodæġ (today). Compare also Gothic 𐌷𐌹𐌼𐌼𐌰 𐌳𐌰𐌲𐌰 (himma daga, (on) this day), Latin hodie (today, literally on this day).
