From gloyw (“bright, shining, sparkling”)[1], from Middle Welsh gloyw, from Old Welsh gloiu, from Proto-Brythonic *gluɨw (compare Old Irish glé (“clear, evident”)).[2] Possibly from short forms of given names containing gloyw (compare Old Cornish Gloiucen, Gloiumed).
