From Old High German *gaffala (attested in mistgaffela), geminated variant of *gavala (attested as gavele), itself a nothern variant of gabala, from Proto-Germanic *gabalō. Compare the same gemination in Dutch and Middle Dutch gaffel, Middle Low German gaffel. Also cognate with German Gabel, dialectal English gavelock.
