Frönd

See also: frond

Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • Frend, Frind (Moselle Franconian)
  • Frönk (Ripuarian, now chiefly western dialects)
  • Fründ (Kölsch)

Etymology

From Old High German friund, northern variant of friunt, from Proto-Germanic *frijōndz. The forms with -ö- (and Moselle Franconian -e-) imply a rather early shortening of the vowel.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /fʀønt/

Noun

Frönd m (plural Frönn or Frönde, diminutive Fröndche)

  1. (many dialects of Ripuarian) friend
Hä es ene jode Frönd vo’ mir.
He’s a good friend of mine.

Usage notes

  • The plural Frönn is used in most of those southern Ripuarian dialects in which Frönd is the native form of the word. The plural Frönde is used in dialects that have replaced native Frönk with Frönd.
