From Old Portuguese França (“France”), from Late Latin Francia (“France”), from Latin Francī (“the Franks”), the nominative plural of Francus, from Frankish *Franko (“a Frank”), from Proto-Germanic *frankô (“javelin”).
Usage notes
França belongs to a small group of place names (along with Espanha, Inglaterra and Itália) which can be used without the definite article when governed by a preposition: Viveu muito tempo em França.
