Etymology

Classifier FlatB@CenterChesthigh-PalmForward (a flat object standing upright, i.e. a door), ...-FlatB@CenterChesthigh-PalmForward (a flat object standing upright, i.e. a wall from which the door may swing), plus swinging motion to illustrate the door swinging open.

Production

  • This two-handed ASL sign is produced as follows:
    1. Posture the nondominant hand in the “flat B” handshape about half an arm's length in front of the neck, palm facing forward. Posture the dominant hand in the “flat B” handshape with the dominant hand at the thumb of the nondominant hand, palm facing forward.
    2. Swing the dominant hand along back to the next posture while holding the nondominant hand still.
    3. Posture the nondominant hand in the “flat B” handshape about half an arm's length in front of the neck, palm facing forward. Posture the dominant hand in the “flat B” handshape a few inches in front of the neck, over and just ahead of the shoulder, palm facing across.
