Emmerich

German

Etymology

Probably merged from three medieval Germanic personal names. The second part is -rīh (ruler). The first part is Proto-Germanic *amala- (vigor, bravery), *haimaz (home), or Proto-Germanic *ermunaz (great, strong; whole, complete). Cognate to Hungarian Imre. Comparable to English Emery and Amory, and distantly to Henry. See also Italian Enrico and Amerigo, from the latter of which America is derived.
