Etymology

From Proto-Norse *Aiwa-rikiaR (literally ever ruler), or *Aina-rikiaR (literally one ruler). *Aiwa- is cognate to Latin aevum (life, lifetime). *Aina- stems from Proto-Germanic *ainaz (one) and is cognate to Latin ūnus (one). The second part, *-rikiaR stems from Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz, cognate to Latin rēx (king).
