Etymology

From Middle High German einœte, from Old High German einōti, derived from ein (alone) with the suffix -ōti (compare Heimat), from Proto-Germanic *-utją. Cognate to Old Saxon ēnōdi and Old English ānād. The suffix was secondarily associated with the unrelated word at hand in modern Öde (wasteland), exceptionally in Old High German einōdi, then already predominantly in Middle High German einœde.
