From Middle High German egel(e), from Old High German egala (8th c.), from Proto-Germanic *egalaz, diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷʰ- (snake) (compare Welsh euod (sheepworm), Ancient Greek ἔχις (ékhis) ~ ὄφις (óphis), Armenian իժ ()). Cognate to Dutch echel (leech).
