From Middle High German bine, from Old High German bini, from Proto-Germanic *biniz, representing an -n- variant of Germanic *bijō. Cognate with Bavarian Bein (bee), Old Saxon bini. Compare from *bijō the form Bei(e) in many dialects (Luxembourgish Bei (bee), Alemannic Beie (bee)).
