Beamter

German

Etymology

Haplologized from Beamteter, substantivization of beamtet, past participle of beamten (to put into office), from Amt (office).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /bəˈʔamtɐ/ (Germany, most areas)
  • IPA(key): /bəˈʔamtər/ (Switzerland, some speakers of southern Germany and Austria)
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Be‧am‧ter

Noun

Beamter m (genitive Beamten, plural Beamte, feminine Beamtin or Beamte)

  1. officer, civil servant, public servant (male or of unspecified sex)

Usage notes

  • Beamter is declined like a masculine nominalized adjective. However, the now predominant feminine form is Beamtin, which is declined like a standard feminine noun. The regular feminine Beamte is also correct, though.
