From Proto-Germanic *Audamērijaz or *Aþalamērijaz, from either Proto-Germanic *audaz (“wealth, riches”) or *aþalaz (“noble”) (the two roots were sometimes conflated) and Proto-Germanic *mērijaz (“famous”). See also French Omer and English Elmer and Aylmer.
