-այք

Old Armenian

Etymology

From -այ (-ay) + (-kʿ). The element -այ (-ay) has different origins: in Iranian borrowings it preserves the stem-vowel -a, e.g. իշխանայք (išxanaykʿ), աշխարհայք (ašxarhaykʿ); in Classical Syriac borrowings it reflects the Classical Syriac ܐ- () (status emphaticus), e.g. խանութայք (xanutʿaykʿ), հռիտորայք (hṙitoraykʿ), պրակսաւաթայք (praksawatʿaykʿ). Probably influenced by the ending of կանայք (kanaykʿ).
