Etymology

From Proto-Athabaskan *qʼutšʼ (to be sour, rancid).

In Northern Athabaskan languages, the stem Proto-Athabaskan *qʼəž, with the same meaning, is derived from Proto-Athabaskan *qʼəš (alder), whence Navajo kʼish (alder).
