Etymology

From Proto-Athabaskan *ɢətsʼ (twist, wring). Compare Carrier nasguz (wash wet linen) and Tanacross nachʼegétth (wash (especially clothes)).

In Navajo the momentaneous imperfective stem is attested in the doublet: -géés / -gíís. This root is related with -GEEZ (to be twisted, crooked).
