From Proto-Athabaskan *tšitɬʼ (snow). Compare Navajo chííl (snowstorm). The root often appears with the emphatic infix -x-.

The verb yíchííł translates as “a snowstorm arrives” in the imperfective mode, while in the perfective mode it means “it snows”.
