Etymology

From Sanskrit स्वस्ति (svasti, “blessing; fortune; prosperity; success; welfare; well-being; etc”). Cognate with Old Khmer svasti, svāsti; Modern Khmer សួស្តី (suəsdəy).

The interjection was first used at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, by Duke Uppakit Sinlapasan in 2476 BE (1933/34 CE). Its official use was ordained by the government of Field Marshall Plaek Phibunsongkhram on 22 January 2486 BE (1944 CE).
