From Old Marathi म्हणणे (mhaṇaṇe), भणणे (bhaṇaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀡𑀇 (bhaṇaï), from Sanskrit भनति (bhanati). Cognate to Konkani म्हण्चे (mhaṇce), Gujarati ભણવું (bhaṇvũ), Nepali भन्नु (bhannu), Awadhi मने (mane).
