  1. the science of health or medicine (it is classed among sacred sciences, and considered as a supplement of the अथर्व- वेद ; it contains eight departments: 1. शल्य or (removal of) any substance which has entered the body (as extraction of darts, of splinters, &c.) ; 2. शालाक्य or cure of diseases of the eye or ear &c. by शलाकाs or sharp instruments ; 3. कायचिकित्सा or cure of diseases affecting the whole body ; 4. भूतविद्या or treatment of mental diseases supposed to be produced by demoniacal influence ; 5. कौमारभृत्य or treatment of children ; 6. अगदतन्त्र or doctrine of antidotes ; 7. रासायनतन्त्र or doctrine of elixirs ; 8. वाजीकरणतन्त्र or doctrine of aphrodisiacs Suṡr.
