The root is փուչ- (pʿučʿ-), from Proto-Indo-European *pʰu-. Cognates include Persian پوک (pūk), پکیدن (pokidan, to blow, to die), Ancient Greek φῦσα (phûsa, bellows), Latin pustula, Russian пыхать (pyxatʹ). Related to փուք (pʿukʿ).
