The origin is unknown. Ačaṙyan compares to Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܡܝܫ (miš, “fog, mist”), Akkadian 𒈪 (/mūšu/, “night”), 𒈬𒅆𒅖 (/mūšiš/, “at night”, literally “as night, to be like darkness, obscuring of light or vision”), Arabic مَسَاء (masāʾ, “evening”).
