Etymology

From Middle Iranian *gāwāzan (spiked stick used for driving oxen). Compare Classical Persian گوازه (gawāza), گاوزنه (gāwzana), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬰𐬀 (gauuāza, ox-goad). Ultimately from Old Iranian *gāwa-āzana-.
