Geschiedenis

De groep werd opgericht in 1957 onder de naam The Roosters en hun eerste hit was For Your Precious Love (1958). De volgende opnamen van het zangkwartet hanteerden verder sterke gospel-tradities. Vanaf circa 1964 werd Curtis Mayfield steeds meer componist en schrijver van de hits en integreerde politieke thema's. Nummers als Keep On Pushing (1964), People Get Ready (1965) en We're a Winner (1968) formuleerden zwart zelfvertrouwen, een thema dat Mayfield aan het begin van zijn solocarrière in het midden van zijn songwriting zou plaatsen. Na zijn afscheid van de groep verviel deze terug in de vergetelheid.

Onderscheidingen

In 1991 werd de groep opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en in 2003 in de Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
