Norman I. Platnick

Norman I. Platnick (30 december 1951 in Bluefield (West Virginia) - 8 april 2020) was een Amerikaans arachnoloog. Hij was emeritus hoogleraar en curator van de afdeling ongewervelde dieren aan het American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

Platnick, die in 1973 zijn doctorstitel ontving aan Harvard University, heeft duizenden spinnensoorten beschreven uit locaties overal ter wereld, onder meer de Lampona murina in Australië. Hij onderhield eveneens de World Spider Catalog, een door het AMNH gehoste website die literatuur over arachnologie bijhoudt, en tracht om een volledige lijst te onderhouden, gesorteerd op taxon, van elke spinnensoort die formeel beschreven werd. In 2007 ontving hij de Bonnet-prijs (genoemd naar Pierre Bonnet) van de International Society of Arachnology als erkenning van zijn werk aan de catalogus.[1]
